Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of Environmental Health & Safety is to protect our students, faculty and staff from danger, risk and injury, while safeguarding our environmental resources.

Vision Statement

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety is dedicated to providing the support, resources and continuous assessment and improvement that support and reflect the University’s mission and strategic plan. This Office strives to develop a nationally recognized environmental, heath and safety program.


The responsibilities and services of EH&S include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Develops, recommends, and implements policy on health, environmental and safety protection.
  2. Develops accident prevention and loss control systems and programs; communicates requirements to faculty, students and staff and ensures implementation throughout campus.
  3. Monitors safety inspection programs, evaluates program maintenance and determines priority of current hazard correction; makes random visits with inspectors.
  4. Develops and implements health and safety educational programs or activities to improve awareness of safety and protection procedures.
  5. Directs individuals, including but not limited to, principal investigators, supervisors, regular and temporary employees, visiting professors and students to obtain any required safety training before working with hazardous chemicals, bio-hazardous agents, radiation, or physical/mechanical hazards in working or learning environments.
  6. Determines whether safety needs are met (e.g., training, personal protective equipment and corrective measures, including non-mandated items identified in safety inspections).
  7. Incorporates workplace safety requirements and responsibilities into each appropriate job description.
  8. Ensures that workplace safety expectations are communicated to each student and employee.
  9. Communicates emergency action preparedness plans to all personnel in order to ensure familiarity and coordination between facility personnel and emergency responders.
  10. Advises, coordinates with and provides technical guidance to University staff, faculty and administrators regarding safety codes, policies and procedures.
